NHT Celebrates D.C.’s June Housing Bloom!
In marking Washington D.C.’s June Housing Bloom, we are celebrating the work of the National Housing Trust in preserving affordable housing in the District of Columbia across 15 properties and more than 800 affordable homes.
Each June, the District of Columbia and Mayor Muriel Bowser host the annual month-long initiative, June Housing Bloom. Events across the District are held in celebration of the public and private sector partners who are working together to produce and preserve affordable housing within the District.
NHT Communities’ largest concentration of properties and residents is in Washington, D.C. In the last year we held resident leadership workshops, shared the personal stories of our residents through Where Will We Live? NHT Communities also won the Committee of 100 Vision Award. NHT Lending, along with the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development, successfully provided funding for a new 86-unit property in Northeast D.C. neighborhood, Deanwood. Last month, NHT-Renewable celebrated the installation of the largest scattered site rooftop solar system in D.C., involving six affordable housing owners and 23 affordable multifamily properties. And finally, NHT also submitted comments to D.C.’s 2019 draft Qualified Allocation Plan, emphasizing the importance of long-term affordability, energy efficiency and green building standards as well as balancing incentives in areas of high economic opportunity and preservation.
As the number of D.C.-focused research papers and articles about gentrification and neighborhood change increase, the city is squarely in the spotlight. A recent study by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition describes approximately 40 percent of D.C.’s lower-income neighborhoods as having experienced gentrification between 2000 and 2013. It is this research and others like it that motivate our team to continue our work across the country, but also right here in Washington, D.C.
Looking forward to the rest of the year, the National Housing Trust hopes to continue to maintain its strong presence in D.C. as an important player in the preservation of affordable housing across the city.
