National Housing Trust’s (NHT) D.C. Healthy, Green, and Affordable Housing (D.C. HGA Housing) program will implement decarbonization and healthy housing upgrades in more than 700 homes in Washington D.C.
Given that D.C. has some of the highest rates of childhood asthma in the country, this project focuses on multifamily buildings where children suffer from chronic asthma. By reducing fossil fuel use in homes and removing other indoor air contaminants, we aim to reduce asthma triggers and other respiratory issues.
NHT and partners are taking an integrated approach to combat the challenges of implementing green and healthy retrofits in affordable multifamily housing. The program combines resident engagement, technical assistance for affordable housing providers, workforce development opportunities, and collaborative community partnerships.
NHT is providing building owners with technical assistance to develop and execute decarbonization and healthy housing implementation plans, as well as support in securing financial resources for building upgrades.
In addition to improving resident health, the program helps multifamily property owners comply with D.C.’s ambitious carbon reduction goals and delivers the benefits of climate-friendly, resilient homes to residents of D.C.’s underserved communities.
This program is administered by NHT in partnership with Children’s Law Center, Children’s National Hospital, VEIC, and Latino Economic Development Center, and is supported by funding from JPMorgan Chase.
The program is currently working with a limited group of properties and is not accepting new applications. All resources and learning materials will be available on this website.
