D.C. Healthy, Green and Affordable Housing Program

National Housing Trust’s (NHT) D.C. Healthy, Green, and Affordable Housing (D.C. HGA Housing) program is helping property owners implement healthy, energy-efficient, and resilient housing upgrades to more than 800 multifamily homes in Washington, D.C.

Because the District has some of the highest rates of childhood asthma in the country, this project focuses on six multifamily buildings that are home to a high prevalence of children with chronic asthma. By addressing conditions that reduce indoor air pollutants and poor energy performance, we aim to improve health and energy outcomes for residents.

NHT and partners are implementing an integrated approach to combat the challenges of implementing these retrofits in affordable multifamily housing. The program combines technical and financial assistance for affordable housing providers to plan, develop, and execute retrofit projects, while incorporating resident feedback in the design process.

In addition to improving resident health outcomes, the program helps multifamily property owners comply with D.C.'s Building Energy Performance Standard (BEPS) and delivers the benefits of resilient homes to residents of D.C.'s underserved communities.

This program is administered by NHT in partnership with Children's Law Center, Children's National Hospital, VEIC, and Latino Economic Development Center, with funding support from JP Morgan Chase.

The program is currently working with a limited group of properties and does not accept new applications. All resources and learning materials will be available on this page.
