NHT Residents Attend “Coffee with a Congressman” in Pennsylvania
This month, Congressman Matt Cartwright (D-PA17) hosted a public “Coffee with a Congressman” event for his constituents to voice their concerns. More than 70 people had a lot to say at the public event held at B'Nai Brith Apartments in Wilkes-Barre, and included in that group was some of NHT’s very own residents from Skyview Apartments in Scranton, PA.
The Skyview residents expressed their concerns about proposed cuts to HUD programs, including project-based Section 8 rental assistance, as well as their support for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (Housing Credits), which help make their homes at Skyview affordable.
Residents included Juana Robles, Maricelys Guzman and her two sons, Axel Colon, Regina Groves, Raquel Flores, and former resident Hema Dahal, who represented her elderly parents – both residents and part of the Nepali Community at Skyview. They were accompanied by Skyview’s Resident Services Coordinator Wilfredo Medina.
Wilfredo spoke directly with Congressman Cartwright about the concerns surrounding the possible cuts to social services, HUD and Section 8, and Housing Credits.
Hema also spoke on behalf of the Nepali refugees and their needs to have low-income subsidized housing as a stepping stone to accomplish the American dream to eventually become homeowners.
“It was an honor for our delegation to represent Skyview Park and our entire community,” said Skyview Park Property Manager Jutta Space. “Congressman Cartwright was very impressed with our delegation… his Deputy Chief of Staff, Bob Morgan, along with his Campaign Manager, Colleen Eagen Gerrity, would like to coordinate a visit to Skyview to meet with us and our residents.”
We are incredibly proud of our Skyview residents and will continue to encourage all NHT residents to engage with their Congressional representatives.
